Getting Personal: On the Right Path

At some point in your life, you come to what’s known as a fork in the road. You’re faced with two choices; two paths that both make sense and seem right. The question then is, Which path should you choose? You can stand there and debate ad nauseum, but at some point, you have to make a decision. I’ve found that making a decision is not the problem, it’s dealing with the consequences and the what ifs. As children of God, we have to trust that whatever path we choose, God has a hand in it and it will all work out for our good.

In the “On the Right Path” series, we meet Keith, Michael and Gina. Three larger-than-life characters who at some point or another must on the right path flyermake a decision that will change their lives forever. In Walk A Straight Line, the first book in the series, Gina falls in love with two brothers. She must decide who to spend the rest of her life with. In My Steps Are Ordered, Keith must decide if his relationship with God is more important than his love for Gina. Finally, in The Fall of the Prodigal, Michael must decide whether or not he will hold onto the past or grab hold of God’s love.

Regardless of the decision they’ve made, good or bad,  each of the characters find their way to God. The road is bumpy and rocky but God loves them. His love sustains them and ultimately draws them to Him. As the author God used to tell these stories, I’m amazed at the depth and spiritual growth of the main characters. Keith Ward in The Fall of the Prodigal is not the same man we meet in Walk A Straight Line. He has evolved into a spiritual powerhouse.

I am amazed at the strong emotions and reactions from readers this series evoked. But, what is remarkable is how God used this series to help ME get on the right path. From the first book to the third, you will see I’ve grown as a writer. But, I’ve also grown as a Christian.  I’ve always loved God. I’ve always been active in church. But there is a necessary act in following Christ, I struggled to do. I did not want to deny myself. I did not want to “die daily.” There were certain hidden desires in my heart which did not line up with God’s will that I refused to crucify. Let me get real personal. Transparent.

My marriage failed. Sometimes I would look back into my past wonder what if I had chosen that person instead? Would my life have been better? I didn’t have an answer to that, so I made it happen in fiction. I gave Gina the man she wanted and what a Mess ensued! You see, what  I didn’t know is how much of God’s truth is in fiction. So, the more my stories ministered to others, the more God ministered to me. His Spirit corrected me until I saw myself. I saw that like Michael, Keith and Gina, I needed God to put me on a different path.I saw the truth. Whatever happened in my life was meant to happen. I had to bury the what ifs of the past. The process was extremely painful, which is a pretty way of saying it was a tough battle.  But the recovery was sweet. For the first time in my life, I can say I am On the Right Path and by God’s grace, I plan to stay on that narrow road to Christ.
